Salon Central Feature Story in the May/June 2014 Issue of Bethesda Magazine.

Why should I choose Salon Central for my go-to beauty professionals?

We’re proud that our focus on excellence in service and client loyalty has earned Salon Central the honor of “A Top Vote Getter” for ‘Best Salon’ five consecutive years by the readers of Bethesda Magazine. We have also been voted into the 2014 “Salon 200,” which is an elite group of salons selected as the finest in the country. First, we are a committed team of professionals who have had extensive training and continue their education. This is a tremendous part of who we are and why we have sustained a successful business for 17 years. But perhaps the most important reason to choose Salon Central is that it all starts with you. We take your individual features, your lifestyle and your personality into consideration before any cut or color service. Getting to know and listening to you is vital to creating a beautiful, customized look for you that works for your specific needs and is effortlessly stylish. Among our team, we have a certified Master Aesthetician with a particular strength in in-depth skin analysis and treatment. We also have a hair stylist who specializes in the “New York Dry Cut.” Dry cutting allows a stylist and guest see the shape of the hair as it’s cut, instead of waiting until it’s washed and blown dry.

Why should I choose Salon Central for my color service?

As owner and manager of Salon Central, I have nurtured a team of experts in hair color and design. I share the same high expectations as our guests for quality color services. Color takes years of experience to do well, and our team is very established and very professional about their work. Providing a hair color service is an art, and we take our art very seriously.

In Honor of National Hairdresser's Day.

I saw this posted on Facebook back in early April and I shared it on my personal wall. It didn't get many likes, and because I have so many friends in the beauty industry on FB I just couldn't understand why it didn't catch anyones attention as it did mine.
So in honor of National Hairdresser's Day I am posting it here on the Salon Central Blog.  I dedicate it to all of those in this great industry who have inspired my career.

    So God Made a Hairdresser
by: Heather R. Smith President StyleNet.com Franklin, TN
    January 16, 2014
And on the 8th day ,God looked down upon his creation and said, I need a person with the hands of an artist and the heart of an angel that will openly and willingly share their gifts and give of their time to others so that they will feel their most beautiful self.
    So God made a Hairdresser
He chose meticulously because He knew the task and responsibility would be gifted to Mothers, Single Mothers, Dads, Partners, Men and Women that would agree, without question, to work tirelessly, sacrifice time with their loved ones, work mostly standing for long hours and weekends with aching feet, hands, backs, joints and wrists, and create their own daily motivation as the task required is both physical and mental. Every day, All Day.
    So God made a Hairdresser
God said, I need a person that will rise early, miss breakfast, open the salon, create the inventory order, stock the retail, maintain their own clients, miss lunch, clean the salon, motivate the staff, motivate themselves, miss dinner, be Human Resource, pay all the bills, motivate their staff again, deal with every possible issue that arises, motivate themselves again, always and forever seek to grow, and stay educated on a regular basis with unwavering passion, drive, and dedication.
Then, get up the next day and do it all over again.
    So God made a Hairdresser
He said, I need someone to dig deep and Make It Work with their talent and gifts to; correct disastrous hair color, smooth a little girl’s tight messy curl so her peers won’t tease her at school, and fit cancer patients with wigs so they can feel pretty and normal again.
    So God made a Hairdresser.
God said, I need someone willing to share their lives with strangers that become clients, and clients that become friends up until the day they pass, and then make them beautiful on their final day of rest.
    So God made a Hairdresser
He needed someone, that would, at the end of a day, that isn't a 9-5, look back at the gifts they've been given, and feel satisfaction and joy for all they created with their hands and heart looking onward to the next with an eagerness to create more, give more, and share more the next day.
    So God made a Hairdresser.

    On The Reality Of Business

In business, somehow, you've learned to trust your gut, to take risks and never look back. You've learned that regret is a waste of time, and that you must never over think an idea. Somehow, you became a stronger person then you ever thought you could be. Your skin grew tough, but remains soft for those who have your back, and for those who have helped you realize your dream. You've learn to take the thick with the thin, and you always remind yourself, that tomorrow is another day, with promise. You’ve toiled unselfishly for the success of those who work by your side, as you will jointly reap the benefits. Finally, you say - life is good, and you never, ever forget to love those, who love you most.

The Role a Hairdresser Plays in Our Lives

hairdresser |ˈhe(ə)rˌdresər|nounperson who cuts and styles hair as an occupation.
New Year's Day is a great day to reflect on how we've had the honor to touch so many lives in our community. As hairdressers, we are innately sensitive to human needs.  The simple act of hairdressing and your trust in us is not to be taken for granted.  The word touch in this case has a double meaning, first as I mentioned above, (touching lives) and second, touch in the sense that you've allowed us to physically touch you. This is a privilege you've given us, and it is our goal to meet your expectations.

Hairdressing is an occupation that dates back to ancient times. Greek writers, Homer and Aristophanes both mention hairdressing in their writings. In many ancient cultures hairdressers were given a very high status. Even back then, was it realized, how important the special relationship was between a individual and their hairdresser. In ancient Egypt, the wealthy had personal hairdressers who lived with them while in ancient Rome the hairdresser held a role as servant or slave.

Hairdressing was first considered a profession in the 1600's. It was in Europe during that time that the word "hairdresser" was first coined. The European fashion at this time for wealthy women was to wear large, complex and intricate styles that were maintained by personal maids (hairdresser) who spent hours creating these designs.

Twentieth century hairdressing, or hairdressing as we know it today, is offered in social spaces like Salon Central, where people come together to socialize, relax and enjoy their time.

This year as always, Salon Central is committed to continuing our education and we will strive to provide you the services you would expect from a team of professionals.  We take extreme pride in our profession, and are thankful that you have chosen us, to touch your lives, and help you achieve your beauty goals for "2014".

We've come a long way baby!
